Brendan is Director of the Institute of Nursing Research and Head of the Person-centred Practice Research Centre at the University of Ulster. He collaborates on a number of practice development and research projects in Ireland, the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia that focus on the development of person-centered practice. His writing and research work focuses on gerontological nursing, person-centered nursing and practice development and he serves on a number of editorial boards, policy committees, and development groups in these areas. He is the Editor of the “International Journal of Older People Nursing”. He has co-authored Practice Development in Nursing which has now been translated into two languages and Practice Development in Nursing: International Perspectives (published 2008). His most recent book, co-authored with Professor Tanya McCance ‘Person-cantered Nursing’ was published in July 2010. Brendan is President of the All-Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association [AIGNA] and Chairman of the charity 'Age NI’.

Mary trained as a registered nurse in Portiuncula Hospital, Galway. She later completed a BSc and MSc Nursing and a higher diploma in Gerontological Nursing in University College Cork. She is a registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Rehabilitation of the Older Person and a Registered Nurse Presciber. Her professional development includes certificates in dementia, parkinsons, palliative care and advanced health and social care. As Practice Development Facilitator in St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork, Mary has been involved in education and a number of quality initiatives which she has published and presented. Her Advanced Nurse Practitioner involves complex case management and ambulatory clinics in the. Assessment & Treatment Centre. She also co-ordinates the Cork Stroke Support Group. Mary was involved in the formation of AIGNA and represents the association on a number of National projects.

Dr. Amanda Phelan

Amanda Phelan has worked both in long-term care of older people and in the context of the community environment visiting older people in their homes.Up until Oct 2010, Amanda was Programme Co-ordinator for the Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Public Health. Her current role is programme co-ordinator for clinical MScs, graduate Leadership programmes and the Management of Elder Abuse programme. She has just completed her PhD is in the area of community nurses and elder abuse. Amanda was nominated as Action on Elder Abuse’s national representative in 2007 and has worked with older persons, relatives and healthcare staff to address concerns regarding elder abuse. She is a Programme Director of the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, based in the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems, University College Dublin. Amanda Phelan has also facilitated elder abuse training for healthcare staff and has published in the area of elder abuse and been used as an expert in the media, as a journal reviewer and other forums.

Doreen trained in general nuring at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital. She completed her midwifery education at Paisley Maternity Hospital, Scotland. She has diplomas in personnel management, counselling and a BNS at University College, Dublin and an MSc at the University of Manchester. Her main clinical experience was in general medicine and care of the older person. Doreen worked as a tutor at the Cork Voluntary Hospital School of Nursing before taking up her current post as Director of the Nurse Education Centre, Mercy University Hospital, Cork. Her main research interests are in care of the older person with dementia.

Doreen is on AIGNA's executive committee, taking on the role of Scientific Secretary since its development n 2009.

Catherine Buckley RGN, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD candidate

Catherine trained as a general nurse in the Cork University Hospital and has extensive clinical experience in both the US and Ireland in cardiac care, oncology, and care of the older adult in both rehabilitation and long-term care. She obtained a BSc (hons) and an MSc from the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC and is currently a PhD candidate in the University of Ulster. Currently she works as a Practice Development Facilitator in St. Finbarr’s Hospital Cork and research assistant in the Catherine MacAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery UCC. She also has a student support remit as the Clinical Practice facilitator for the higher diploma in Gerontology at UCC. Catherine’s research interests include practice development, person-centred care, social isolation and socialization of older adults in long term care, and dementia care. In her practice development role in St. Finbarr’s hospital Catherine is the internal facilitator for the National Person Centred Care Practice Development Programme and a trainer for the HSE Managing Allegations of Elder Abuse programme.

Catherine has been on the Management Committee of AIGNA since it’s establishment in 2009 and has responsibility for monitoring and updating the AIGNA website.

Dr. Assumpta Ryan

Assumpta graduated from the University of Ulster in 1991 with a first class honours degree in Professional Development in Nursing. She completed a Masters degree (with ditinction)in 1995 and a PhD in 2006. She is currently a lecturer at the School of Nursing and a member of the Institute of Nursing Research at the University of Ulster.Dr Ryan's clinical interest is in gerontological nursing and the care of older people. Her research interests include community care for older people, the needs and experiences of rural family carers and the impact of a move to a care home on older people and their families.

Assumpta has been on the management of the committee since development of the association in 2009.

Caroline trained as a registered Psychiatric Nurse in Cork as well as a Registered General Nurse in Sheffield. She worked in care of the older person services in the UK's NHS. From August 2006 to August 2008, she held the National Post of Practice Development Facilitator with Nursing Homes Ireland, providing education, practice development to member nursing homes as well as representing the organisation on many national and regional groups. Caroline is currently employed as an Inspector with the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA)with the Office of the Chief Inspectorate of Social Services, HIQA.

Caroline was a member of the Gerontological Nursing Development Group and has been on AIGNA's executive and management committee since its development.

Claire trained as a registered nurse in Derry and worked as a clinical nurse in the area of caring for older people in a number of hospitals in London before embarking on an academic career. Claire is now a lecturer in Nursing in NUI Galway and is programme director for the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Gerontology) and year co-ordinator for the 4th year BNS (General) programme. Claire's main research focus is on Elder Abuse.

Claire has been a member of the committee for AIGNA since August 2009.
Sineád Morrissey

Sinéad completed a BNurs (Hons) Degree in Manchester University in 2000. In the UK this degree enabled Sinéad to be registered within the General Nursing Division, as a Specialist Practitioner in the Community (District Nursing) and as a Nurse Prescriber. Sinéad has also undertaken a Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice Certificate, two cancer nursing modules at level three and a managerial qualification. Sinéad joined NHI in 2008, prior to this she was a District Nurse Team Leader in Manchester having worked for eight years in a managerial capacity within District Nursing and Care of the Older Person in the NHS. In her current role Sinéad is responsible for all clinical matters directed through the organisation. Sinéad represents NHI on a number of national and local working groups aimed at improving standards, educating and providing support and guidance to staff with the vision for improving the care given to our older population. In addition the role of the Practice Development Facilitator is to review international practice and research to assist in the development of new initiatives within the Irish nursing home sector. Sinéad reports to the Board of Directors through the CEO and assists in driving the agenda of the NHI National Nursing Committee. Sinéad has been part of the AIGNA management committee since inception and assists with marketing/sponsorship; production and distribution of FEASA; and organising the annual conference and AGM.

Daragh Rodger

daragh.rodger@hse.ie Daragh Rodger qualified as an RGN in 1989 from South Sefton Health Authority, Liverpool. She continued her education by completing many courses set down by the ENB (English Nursing Board). On return to Ireland in 1994 she has worked in care of the older adult gaining experience in acute care, rehabilitation and long term care. She has completed a Diploma in Gerontological nursing, The Royal College Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI)1995, Higher Diploma in Wound Management and Tissue Viability from RCSI, 2004, BSc in Nursing from University College Dublin, 2005, Msc Nursing from RCSI, 2009, Certificate in Nurse Prescribing from RCSI, 2010 and is at present studying for the Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice at RCSI.

At present she is working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Health Promotion and Assessment of the Older Adult which includes a Nurse led Healthy Ageing Clinic and a Community Liaison Clinic.

Randal is presently Assistant Director of the Nursing/Midwery Planning & Development Unit in the HSE North-West Area. He has extensive experience in working with older people and their families and a real passion for the development of person-centred services. He completed a PhD study in 2010, via the University of Ulster, that extended existing knowledge about realistic evaluation, practice development and the application of critical methods in facilitating the development of evidence-informed and person-centred workplace cultures. His research interests focus on the areas of gerontological nursing, practice development, action research, and chronic care management.
