About Us
Networking: Information Sharing: Knowledge Translation Activities: The interim Executive & Management Committee for the All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA) has been established representing a variety of settings relevant to the older adult – community to residential care; public and private; clinical practice to education, management and research; and geographical spread. Executive / Management Committee meetings are teleconferenced. The data from the numerous Expression of Interest forms received to date from colleagues all over Ireland has been collated in order to inform the development and future direction of the Association. AIGNA held its inaugural conference on Thursday 4th June 2009 in Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork. The Associations 1st AGM was held on Thursday October 8th at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. A Master Class facilitated by Professor Brendan McCormack was also hled on this date. The formalities of AIGNA including the process for election of officers to the Executive Committee and Management Committee was on the agenda for the AGM. It is envisaged that venues for meetings & conferences will be held at various locations throughout Ireland and communication via e-mail & post in addition to website and teleconferences will facilitate networking, sharing of information & maximum involvement in development of the association.
Our Patron
We are pleased to have Ms Mary Banotti as Patron of AIGNA as she has an exemplary track record in international human rights. She herself worked as a nurse in the USA, Canada, England, Italy, Canada and Africa and has a keen interest in the development of the nursing profession in Ireland. Born in Dublin, a grand-niece of Irish Patriot Michael Collins and sister to Nora Owen, TD, Mary is committed to public service and politics. Since her election to European Parliament, she has worked on a variety of issues including environmental and human rights. She is strategically placed to further AIGNA’s aims and objectives. At AIGNA’s inaugural conference in June 2009, Mary proudly announced that she had just celebrated her 70th birthday and commented that she now had a vested interest in healthy aging. Mary welcomes the development of an All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association which will raise awareness of the needs of older adults and give recognition to the important role of Gerontological nurses.
